Jong M. Rho, MD

Director, Pediatric Epilepsy Research

Dr. Rho is the Associate Director of Child Neurology, the Director of Pediatric Epilepsy Research, a Senior Staff Scientist, and an attending neurologist at Barrow Neurological Institute. After obtaining an undergraduate degree in molecular biophysics and biochemistry at Yale University, Dr. Rho received his medical degree in 1987 from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He is a member of the American Epilepsy Society where he serves on several committees, a member of the Neurological Sciences and Disorders C (NSD-C) Study Section with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and a reviewer for several professional journals.

Dr. Rho studies the mechanism of action of the ketogenic diet, including the role of ketone bodies in the regulation of membrane excitability, the effects of the ketogenic diet on mitochondrial uncoupling protein activity, and the effects of the ketogenic diet on the generation of reactive oxygen species. Dr. Rho’s research activities have been sponsored by many NIH research grants as well as a variety of intramural and extramural public and private funding sources. He has published extensively in basic science and pediatric neurology peer-reviewed journals, written numerous book chapters, and edited several books. He is a popular national and international guest lecturer.
