ThinkFirst for Kids | Presentations

Barrow Neurological Institute of St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, Phoenix, Arizona

ThinkFirst for Kids presentations are designed to increase knowledge and awareness about risks of brain and spinal cord injury and the use of good safety habits. These presentations target children who are 6 to 8 years old and their parents and teachers.

ThinkFirst for Kids presenters discuss five key safety messages: pedestrian and vehicular safety, water safety, bicycle safety, violence prevention and sports and recreational safety. The "Street Smart" video enhances these safety messages by featuring everyday scenarios.

ThinkFirst for Kids Curriculum is designed to be presented in a classroom format and is fully integrated into the elementary school curriculum. Each grade (1-3) has a separate curriculum and an array of classroom activities designed specifically for their grade level. Activities are designed to be integrated into various subjects, such as mathematics and science. The goal is to help students develop safety habits that will minimize their risks of sustaining a brain or spinal cord injury. The intent is to make the learning experience fun, yet meaningful, and to involve not only students, but teachers, parents, and the community as well.

Program Components

  • A "Street Smart" video, which is culturally diverse, addresses five safety areas by showing true-life scenarios.
  • Five individual safety modules address individual safety areas, including pedestrian and vehicular safety, water safety, bicycle safety, violence, and sports and recreational safety.
  • The five safety modules are supplemented with hands-on activities and reinforcement strategies.
  • Modules are introduced with a bulletin board poster and followed-up with a comic strip page depicting "Street Smart" in related scenarios.
