Treatment Options for Cleft and Craniofacial Disorders

Barrow Neurological Institute of St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, Phoenix, Arizona

The treatment plan selected for a craniofacial patient depends on the patient's abnormality, which can range from a simple to complex anomaly. Some patients suffer from syndromic disorders that cause abnormal growth of the skull due to facial abnormalities. In addition, skull and facial deformities often affect other organs.

At the Barrow Children's Cleft and Craniofacial Center, children with craniofacial deformities are seen by a first-rate team of professionals from a variety of medical and related disciplines including neurosurgeons, pediatricians, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, geneticists, orthodontists, otolaryngologists, dentists, craniofacial physical therapists, and speech pathologists. Team members treat each patient individually and with compassion. The craniofacial treatment plan that results from team recommendations is shared and coordinated with the referring physician and the patient's family.

Medical Intervention

Thorough medical management helps ensure that the craniofacial patient is physically, emotionally, socially, mentally, and spiritually prepared for surgery. Issues concerning orthodontia or airway obstruction, or the presence of an acute neurological or a systemic illness, can affect a patient's response to surgery. The Barrow Children's Cleft and Craniofacial team ensures that these issues are resolved before surgery. The team's goals are to achieve successful surgical outcomes and to minimize complications.

Surgical Intervention

Surgical intervention may require skull and facial reconstruction. The craniofacial team attempts to minimize the number of surgical days by thoughtfully planning combined procedures instead of the traditional multiple surgeries. A good surgical plan is staged throughout the child's growing years and can improve the child's long-term quality of life.
