A standard component of the preoperative evaluation for epilepsy surgery is neuropsychological consultation and testing. Barrow neuropsychologists are experts at understanding and evaluating the particular issues experienced by persons with epilepsy. Many people with epilepsy experience some cognitive problems. Neuropsychological examinations can help explain some of these problems, such as difficulty in using or understanding language, recognizing spatial patterns, remembering and/or other mental functions. Understanding a patient's preoperative profile often helps localize the seizure focus. For example, patients with left temporal lobe epilepsy typically show a different pattern of results on neurpsychological testing than patients with right temporal lobe epilepsy.
