Genetic testing involves techniques that are usually only performed
at specialized centers. A few months may be needed to obtain the
final results. Genetic testing is usually, but not always, done by
analyzing genetic information found in blood cells obtained through
a blood sample.
Due to the highly specialized nature of genetic testing, a
diagnosis with an accurate description of symptoms is required to
determine how the DNA extracted from blood cells will be studied.
Genetic tests are not entirely accurate; therefore, it is important
for patients to be counseled about the benefits, risks, and
limitations of genetic testing by a genetic counselor or physician.
