Stroke Program

Strokes can create new disabilities that require immediate rehabilitation. If a stroke occurs in the left side of the brain, the result can be impairment in speech, comprehension, or movement on the right side of the body. Rehabilitation, which can help restore impaired body functions, is most effective when implemented immediately after a stroke.

Most improvement occurs during the first 3 to 6 months of rehabilitation; most patients continue to improve over time.  Rehabilitation is a challenge for patients and their family so it is important that both work closely with the rehabilitation team.  When the patient returns home, rehabilitation often is continued through the Center for Transitional Neurorehabilitation or outpatient therapy programs.
