The goals of spinal surgery are typically to relieve pain and to
remove pathological lesions. However, surgical resections of
the stabilizing structures of the spine can leave the spine in a
vulnerable condition that later might lead to complications.
To better understand how surgical procedures alter the biomechanics
of the spine, research is beneficial. The
Spinal Biomechanics
Laboratory
at the BNI was established in 1993 and is actively
researching scientific questions raised by BNI spine surgeons that
are of interest to spine surgeons worldwide.
