William Shapiro, MD

Dr. Shapiro received his MD from the University of California - San Francisco in 1961. After his training as a neurology resident, he completed a 3 year research fellowship at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland. He spent 20 years practicing and teaching at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, where he held the Anne Burnett Tandy Chair in Neurology and served as Head of the Cotzias Laboratory of Neuro-Oncology. In 1989, Dr. Shapiro relocated to Phoenix, Arizona to become Chairman of Neurology and Chief of Neuro-Oncology at Barrow Neurological Institute, and was named the Kemper and Ethel Marley Chair in Neurology.

For 12 years, Dr. Shapiro served as chairman of the NCI-sponsored Brain Tumor Cooperative Group. He has studied brain tumors in both a laboratory and clinical setting for the past 40 years, publishing more than 200 original papers and chapters on a variety of neuro-oncological subjects. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Research Career Development Award NINCDS, the Anne and Jason Farber Foundation Award in Brain Tumor Research, and a Life Time Achievement Award from the Society for Neuro-Oncology. He has served as a consultant to numerous pharmaceutical companies, advising and developing clinical trials for brain tumor patients and serving as a principal investigator for many of these trials.
