Micah, a 2-year-old boy from Phoenix, was left in critical condition when the car he was a passenger in was hit by another as it passed through an intersection. The impact was so severe that it severed the ligaments connecting his skull to his atlas, or first cervical vertebra, leaving his head connected to the rest of his body only by muscle and skin. With the junction of his brain and spinal cord now vulnerable, even the slightest movement could have been deadly.
Luckily for Micah, Barrow Neurosurgeons, led by Dr. Nicholas Theodore, were able to rejoin his skull to his spine using a combination of rods and wires, saving his life and his chances of a happy, healthy childhood.
