About the Center

The Barrow Stroke Center is one of the most experienced and expert stroke programs in the country, caring for more stroke patients than any other center in the southwestern United States. The Barrow Stroke Center has also treated more patients with tPA (tissue plasminogen activator), the only FDA-approved "clot-busting" drug, than any hospital in the United states. Barrow is the major stroke research center in the Southwest. Our team conducts more clinical stroke treatment and prevention research trials than any other institution in the region.

Stroke Network

The Barrow Stroke Center is networked with numerous Arizona hospitals to provide advanced diagnosis and treatment for patients with stroke and other neurovascular disorders. Doctors at network hospitals have protocols and telephone support for providing emergency stroke treatment, after which patients are transferred to the Barrow Stroke Center for further care and diagnostic studies.

Barrow Stroke Team

The Barrow Stroke Team is available 24 hours a day to treat stroke victims and to offer professional service to doctors throughout Arizona. The Stroke Team consists of the following specialists:

  • Neurologists with expertise in stroke
  • Neurosurgeons specializing in endovascular and cerebrovascular techniques
  • Neuroradiologists using and investigating advanced technology for brain imaging and intervention
  • Neuroscience nurses specialized in stroke, critical care, acute care, and rehabilitation (Barrow Stroke Center is staffed by nurses who are members of American Association of Neuroscience Nurses)
  • Case managers and social workers
  • Neurorehabilitation physicians and neuropsychologists as well as physical, occupational, and speech therapists
Our goals are to improve outcomes for stroke patients through improved diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation, and to prevent stroke through public education and outreach.

Focus On Outcomes—Best Practices

Sophisticated technology and research are translated into improved outcomes at the Barrow Stroke Center. Our methodology relies on
best practice "guidelines" to improve key processes. Physicians, nurses, technicians, and therapists receive continuous training on advances in stroke care.

Of special importance is patient and family satisfaction with the care process. Barrow caregivers continuously strive to improve patient care by seeking input from patients and families through questionnaires and direct feedback.
