Will Attend Day on the Lake with Son on Mother’s Day
For the first time since a car crash left her arms and legs paralyzed, Kerry Newberry, will spend Mother’s Day like a “normal” mom with the miracle in her life, two-year-old Gus. On Saturday, May 12, Newberry will water ski, jet ski, and kayak across Bartlett Lake at Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s annual Day on the Lake.
“This will be the best Mother’s Day,” says the Buckeye mom. “Thanks to Barrow, my son will get to see his mom participate in something that is cool and adventurous. Even better, we can do it together.”
Newberry, 31, is a quadriplegic who underwent neuro rehabilitation for a spinal cord injury at Barrow 14 years ago. Though it’s not always been an easy road, she has since excelled in her career at Grand Canyon University, met and married the love of her life, Carter, and given birth to a healthy baby boy named Gus who she says is the best thing she’s ever created.
Everyday after work, Newberry looks forward to her play-time with Gus. Since she can’t always participate in the energetic toddler’s activities, Day on the Lake provides the Newberry family with a special new opportunity.
“Gus is always asking me to join in whatever he is doing, saying ‘c'mon mama.’ It breaks my heart that I cannot always follow where he goes,” says Newberry. “This will be a day he can say ‘c'mon’ and we can all do something together he will never forget. It is an indescribable feeling.”
The innovative event attracts more than 100 participants from around the U.S. and is the only integrated water sports event of its caliber offered in Arizona. Day on the Lake provides people with neurological disabilities access to adapted water sports including water skiing, jet skiing, kayaking, boating and fishing. With help from St. Joseph’s Barrow Connection, a specialized team from California, and volunteers, participants can try their hand at water sports in a safe and encouraging environment. The 16th annual event is set for Mother’s Day weekend, Thursday, May 10 through Saturday, May 12 at Bartlett Lake Marina from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
“Barrow believes that everyone has the right to live an active and productive life,” says Jo Crawford, program coordinator for St. Joseph’s Barrow Connection. “This is the one day in Arizona that every body has access to explore adapted water sports.”
