5/9/12 Valley Mother and Daughter Share Bond after Both Undergo Brain Surgery
A Valley mother is thanking her daughter this Mother’s Day for giving her a new chance at life. After Beth Benecke was diagnosed with a brain tumor in March with little hope for survival, her daughter Nadine Benecke Thompson reached out to the brain surgeon who saved her own life after three deadly aneurysms were detected in her brain. Dr. Peter Nakaji at St. Joseph’s Barrow Neurological Institute was the only surgeon Thompson believed could help her mother.

5/4/12 Paralyzed Mom will "Ride the Waves" with Son over Mother's Day Weekend
For the first time since a car crash left her arms and legs paralyzed, Kerry Newberry, will spend Mother’s Day like a “normal” mom with the miracle in her life, two-year-old Gus. On Saturday, May 12, Newberry will water ski, jet ski, and kayak across Bartlett Lake at Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s annual Day on the Lake.
5/2/12 Mesa Resident’s Miracle Recovery Featured on New Medical Website
A Mesa girl has been selected from thousands of patients around the world to tell her amazing medical story on a new website, Barrow50.org. Courtney Rogers, 17, a junior at AAEC (Arizona Agribusiness and Equine Center, underwent a unique surgery at Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center last year to remove a large tumor on the surface of her spine inside her chest cavity.
5/1/12 St. Joseph’s Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center Presents Annual Parkinson Art Show
The Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at St. Joseph’s Barrow Neurological Institute will host the 5th Annual Bruce Florence Parkinson Juried Art Exhibition in conjunction with the Fountain Hills Parkinson Support Group. Parkinson’s disease patients and caregivers participate in a five-week art workshop provided by the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center. The workshop concludes with an exhibition of their works.

3/29/12 Novel Clinical Trial for Down Syndrome Patients Launches at Barrow
Physicians at Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center are conducting a novel research study to evaluate a medication that could improve intellectual function in young adults with Down syndrome. Participants for the clinical trial are currently being recruited.

Dignity Health Arizona (formerly Catholic Healthcare West) has applied to the Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services (CMS) to create a new Medicare-approved Accountable Care Organization (ACO). The ACO will support enhanced clinical collaboration and care improvements for Medicare patients.

Muhammad Ali will honor outstanding surgeons and physicians at St. Joseph’s Hospital’s Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. The tribute comes as Barrow celebrates its 50th anniversary and will be the first of many Golden Anniversary festivities in 2012. At this inaugural event, 50 Barrow doctors will be presented with Muhammad Ali Celebrity Fight Night recognition awards. Barrow is home of the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center, which is largely funded by Celebrity Fight Night – Ali’s signature annual event.

1/5/12 Young Connecticut Woman is Seizure-Free Following Brain Surgery to Cure Epilepsy
Neurosurgeons at Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix have successfully cured a young Connecticut woman’s epilepsy which was causing her multiple seizures a day. Sarena Salmeri, 21, of Plantsville, had a section of her brain removed to stop her seizures at Barrow in February. In May she returned to Barrow to undergo deep brain stimulation to have a pacemaker implanted into her brain to control hand tremors.
